North Coast Physical Education Project
Activities/Outcomes/Improvements

What follows is a listing of the objectives of the project coupled with activities, outcomes, and improvements in teaching and student achievement.

Objective 1

To develop a group of elementary school teachers who will serve as leaders in the continuing development of physical education programs that emphasizes effective pedagogical practices and assessment techniques.

Recruit 20 teachers (2 per selected school) Region-wide teachers with expertise in planning physical education program Teachers make significant improvements in their programs to meet state standards.
Implement leadership training seminar Teachers develop action plans and assess the needs of their schools Teachers revise programs according to state standards
Provide pedagogy and assessment training New pedagogical and assessment practices including sport education K-8 students benefit from improved instruction
Prepare teachers to serve as consultants to other teachers in their schools and districts Teachers conduct inservice programs and serve as consultants to other teachers in their schools Entire school benefits from improved instruction in physical education
Teachers develop action plans for their ongoing professional development Action plans serve as blue prints for future development on a school-wide basis Action plans are shared with principal and other teachers to help the entire school develop an exemplary physical education

Objective 2

To assist schools in developing a school-wide plan to improve the performance levels of children in physical education.

Develop physical education and nutrition programs that emphasizes heart health Implement lessons that focus on increasing physical activity and providing instruction on a heart healthy diet Children increase their levels of physical activity and reduce fat in their diet
Link nutrition and physical education instruction Teachers use Health Related Fitness books in their programs Students can make wise food choices
Link physical education to other curricular areas, e.g. science Teachers implement lessons that teach concepts related to other curriculum areas Students demonstrate knowledge of the cardiovascular system in biology and in developing goals in social science
Train recess/playground aides to implement active games Aides provide cooperative and active games at recess that focus on interaction and cooperation Number of negative behavior incidents on the playground are reduced
Promote awareness of dangers of tobacco use especially with upper grade student Tobacco education components are built into lessons Students are aware of the dangers of all forms of tobacco use
Develop school wide scope and sequence in physical education for each school Teachers devise their own curriculum consistent with local needs and California guidelines A sequential and developmental physical education program is established in each school

Objective 3.

To develop elementary school physical education programs that reflects the vision of the California Physical Education Framework and California Physical Education Challenge Standards

Provide inservice training using CA Framework and CA Challenge Standards. Teachers know, understand, and implement the Framework and Challenge Standards Students are provided with lessons and curriculum that reflect the Framework and Challenge Standards
Develop physical education programs based on state documents Teachers demonstrate lessons that are consistent with state guidelines Students are provided with lessons that focus on movement skills, self image and personal and social development through sport education
Teachers share state documents with other teachers in their schools Teachers disseminate state documents and conduct inservice training with teachers from their school sites Teachers make adjustments in their physical education program to follow the state guidelines

Objective 4

To provide intensive support for effective practice and professional development opportunities in the use of technology for teachers in 10 elementary schools in Northcoast California

Teachers develop technology skills in seminars Teachers use technology to support instruction Students use heart rate monitors and pedometers to evaluate and promote physical fitness
Provide equipment to develop programs Teachers develop active physical education programs using equipment Equipment is available for schools to support instruction and a system is in place to supervise equipment
Model lessons for teachers to develop Teachers adapt and refine lessons to meet goals of the project Digital videotape portfolio of best practices in physical education created
Use of curriculum resources to guide teaching skills Teachers are proficient in selecting and teaching lessons Electronic portfolios of teachers serve as a record of achievement
Use of heart rate monitors and caltrac devices to monitor physical activity patterns Heart rate monitors and caltrac devices are incorporated into teaching Students understand heart rate and exercise and physical activity and energy relationships
Use of a website to support the inservice training of teachers Teachers have a website and communication system to support their instruction Website functions as an ongoing source of support for teachers in the region

Objective 5

To train teachers in specific professional practices that result in the integration of students with disabilities in physical education programs.

Train teachers in adapted physical education service delivery options Teachers collaborate with special education personnel to provide services to all children Children with disabilities are included within physical education classes
Introduce adapted physical education assessment options Teachers know and are able to administer basic tests such as the TGMD, Brockport Physical Fitness Test and CARE-R Teachers are able to plan an assessment and develop a physical education plan for all individuals with disabilities
Adaptation of activities to foster inclusion of all children Children with disabilities are effectively integrated into all lessons and receive the benefits of a physical education program through sport education Children with disabilities demonstrate improvement in physical fitness and motor skill development

Objective 6

To collaborate with the United Indian Health Services (UIHS) to provide specific education programs at schools for diabetes

Educate teachers regarding risk factors for diabetes Lesson plans include specific training on risk factors for diabetes Students are aware of the risk factors for diabetes and the importance of healthy lifestyles
Collaborate with UIHS activities to include diabetes education In conjunction with UIHS specific classes within schools receive diabetes education Specific community activities are delivered in conjunction with UIHS to increase student physical activity levels through family participation
Implement a Family Fitness Program at school sites In conjunction with UIHS specific classes within schools receive a family fitness program Students and parents learn about cardiovascular health and increase their levels of physical activity

Objective 7

To create school and community networks consisting of a broad range of professionals charged with the goal of promoting physical education programs

Develop alliances with organizations such as the American Heart Association to enhance sport education seasons Community organizations support and enhance school physical education programs Student are exposed to a variety of community agencies and resources during sport education seasons
Develop a community coalition of agencies to promote a physically active lifestyle Physical education programs are connected to community organizations to enable students to develop active healthy lifestyles outside of school Students develop a plan for an active healthy lifestyle that includes involvement with community activities

Objective 8

To enable children to understand the value of healthy lifestyles by teaching the concepts and knowledge to support regular physical activity and heart healthy nutrition.

Train teachers in use of Fitnessgram fitness assessment. Teachers effectively use the Fitnessgram in their teaching and use results to drive assessment Students' scores on Fitnessgram show improvement and they are able to develop appropriate physical fitness goals
Develop lessons that teach concepts about physical education and heart healthy nutrition. Students learn basic concepts associated with physical fitness and heart healthy nutrition such as ways to reduce saturated fat and salt in the diet Schools use a physical education curriculum that emphasizes heart health and encourages students to adopt an active and healthy lifestyle
Use knowledge tests to assess cognitive learning in physical education and nutrition Teachers use knowledge tests to evaluate their teaching related to knowledge about physical fitness and heart healthy nutrition Students' scores on knowledge tests show improvement
