Welcome to the
North Coast Physical Education Project

Introduction
The project plans to have a strong focus in developing teacher-leaders who can improve student achievement in elementary school physical education programs. In so doing, this proposal would establish the Northcoast Physical Education Project (NPEP), a collaborative relationship among the Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE), 10 rural elementary schools in the Northcoast region of California and their Offices of Education, community agencies (i.e., United Indian Health Services) and Sonoma State and Humboldt State Universities.
Goals
The goal of the project will be to improve instruction in physical education, with specific regard to elementary schools in rural, isolated areas, many of which have student bodies with high percentages of Native Americans. To achieve this goal, NPEP will assist teachers in developing exemplary physical education programs and will utilize local teachers, community health professionals, and university faculty in providing instructional expertise to participants. This process will provide ongoing support to ensure that participating schools will be offered many opportunities for promoting active and healthy lifestyle practices of their students in socially acceptable settings. Leadership development will thus include an examination of effective pedagogical practices and assessment techniques and will encourage teachers to develop physical education programs consistent with the California State Standards and the needs facing diverse rural communities.
